R. Marshall Tanner is a partner in the Corporate and Real Estate Practice Groups in the firm's Orange County office.
Areas of Practice
Mr. Tanner maintains a general corporate and commercial practice that includes, among other things, mergers and acquisitions, technology licensing, the formation of business entities, joint venture transactions, debt and equity financing, corporate and business governance, and counseling clients in general business and commercial matters. He acts as principal outside counsel for many emerging and middle market companies in Orange and Los Angeles Counties. He also represents various publicly-traded companies in commercial transactions.
In addition to his corporate practice, Mr. Tanner has for many years represented clients in complex real estate matters, including real estate acquisitions and sales, tax deferred exchanges, leasing transactions, the formation of real estate joint ventures and limited partnerships, real estate debt financing and land use matters. His real estate clients have included, among others, Chevron Land & Development Company, Huntington Beach Company, Hilton Corporation, and Armstrong Garden Centers.
Mr. Tanner is the former international chairman of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society and is currently a member of its international advisory board and the area director of the Society for Latin American chapters. He served on the board of directors of the Life Sciences Industry Council of Orange County from August, 2003, to March, 2005, and is active in a variety of other community and professional organizations. He is a member of the Business Law and Real Property Law Sections of the California State Bar Association.
Prior to joining Sheppard Mullin, Mr. Tanner lived for a period of three years in São Paulo, Brazil, where he served as his church's area legal counsel, responsible for overseeing all of the Church’s legal affairs and government relations activities in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
